Composting Made Easy Means All Benefit And Minimum Work

For avid gardeners, having an ample supply of rich compost is a dream. The use of compost will result in nicer plants, but producing the material can be time consuming and hard work. The more you can reduce that effort, investing the saved time in other gardening tasks, the better.

One way to start the process is by building composting bins that at least semi-automate the productopn of compost. A bin should be five feet wide, five feet deep, and four feet high. Start by sinking 4 by 4 posts in the ground for the corners, and then nail 2 by 4s and 1 by 4s, alternating on the sides, leaving 2″ gaps between the boards for air circulation. The 2 by 4s are rigid enough to keep the sides from bowing out, and in between each 2 by 4 you can use 1 by 4s to save a little money. The bins are three-sided, with the front open so they can be filled and emptied easily.

Fill one of the bins with grass clippings, dried leaves, and shrub clippings, trying not to put more than 6″ of each material on a layer and alternating layers of green and brown material. Keep a few bags of dry leaves around to help with the alternating.

When you root cuttings use coarse sand in the flats and put the old sand on the compost pile. It’s a good idea to take plants that do not survive and dump the entire container in the compost bin, which adds more brown material to the mix.

After the bin is full, one option is to turn the material in the bin every few weeks. Another option, however, is to pack as much material in the bin as possible, then start filling the second bin, piling the material as high as possible, even to the point where it spills out in front of the bin and covering the fresh material with mulch or potting soil.

Setting a small sprinkler on top of the pile and turning it on at a very low level will let a small spray of water run on the material. By keeping the material damp, the moisture will cause the pile to heat up, which is what makes the composting action take place.

Once the first bin is full, the second bin is used. As the material in the first bin starts to break down, it settles, which means you can keep shoveling the material piled in front of the bin, up on top of the pile. Continue to do this until all the material is either in the bin or piled on top of the heap. Then leave it alone, except for the occasional watering, which speeds up the process.

Not all of the material will rot completely, a result of not turning the pile. But the material in the center will break down more than the material on the edges, most of it breaking down quite well. Keeping a pile of potting soil on hand at all times or buying two or three yards of shredded mulch to get started, will mean always having a supply of good compost.

Left in a pile, shredded bark will eventually break down and become great compost, and some potting soil is about 80% rotted bark. Some buy fine textured and dark hardwood bark mulch, and put it in a pile to rot, keeping the pile low and flat so it does not shed the rain water away. The idea is to keep the mulch to stay as wet as possible to allow the mulch to break down quickly.

Keep a pile of rotted bark mulch near the compost bins and empty the bin containing the oldest material by piling it on top of the rotted bark mulch. The pile of rotted mulch should be wide and flat on top so the compost material is only 5 to 10 inches thick when it is spread.

The mulch pile might be 12″ wide, but only be 24 to 30 inches high. Once the compost is on top of the pile, go around the edge of the pile with a shovel, and take some of the material from the edges of the pile, tossing it up on top of the pile, covering the compost with at least 6″ of rotted bark. In this way the compost material will fully decompose.

Once the system is started, don’t use all of the material in the pile. Keep at least 2 to 3 cubic yards on hand so there will be something to mix with the compost. If necessary, buy more material and add to e pile in the late summer or fall.

Some supply companies sell a compost material that is already broken down, but try to keep at least 3 yards of old material on hand, adding another 3 yards of fresh material. In the spring you can empty one of the compost bins and add the compost to the top of the pile.

The pile of usable compost will be layers of material, some of which can be chipped off and spread on the ground. You can then mix it together with a tiller and shovel it onto a potting bench.

Having a pile of rotted compost near the compost bins will allow you to throw some rotted compost in the bin, maintaining the layered effect necessary for composting to work well.

Shaping Your Bonsai - Wiring and Anchoring Techniques

An important part of the art of Bonsai is guiding the tree into the desired shape. If you follow the traditional Japanese style of Bonsai you will try to create a tree like one that can be found in nature, but you may exaggerate some of the elements for style purposes.

You will have to know what you want your tree to look like before you can start shaping it. You should be able create an image in your mind of exactly how you want your tree to appear. Once you have decided on the style and shape there are several methods used to guide your bonsai into the shape you desire.

Two very common and basic methods of shaping the tree are wiring and anchoring.

Wiring

When you wire a tree you use a metal wire to hold a section of the tree into the shape that you want. Wiring has the advantage of training the tree to the desired shape quicker than most other methods.

Since it is softer aluminum wire is used to wire most branches. When using aluminum wire you will need to use a thicker wire to hold the branch in place. The thicker wire is less likely to cut into the bark, which greatly reduces the risk of scarring. When training heavier branches or changing the shape of the trunk a stronger wire will be needed. In this case you will probably need to use copper or even steel wire.

To wire a branch you simply wrap the branch with wire and then gently bend it into the position that you want. You leave the wire in place to hold the branch until it is capable of holding that shape unassisted. Once you wire a branch you will need to watch it closely to be sure that the branch has not thickened to the point that the wire is cutting into the bark. You need to be especially vigilant with deciduous trees because they tend to thicken in spurts.

You should always start your wire on thicker branches and work your way up to the thinner ones.

Your wiring job will be more stable if you use one wire to wire two branches.

If you notice your wire getting tight remove it to avoid scarring. If the branch still will not stay in position you can re-wrap it to accommodate its new size.

Anchoring

Frequently a branch that is several years old will be too thick, in this case wiring the branch will not be very effective. For branches like this anchoring will probably work better. Anchoring works by pulling the branch into the position you want and keeping it there.

You start by looping a wire or string over the branch you want to anchor. Any place that the string or wire touches the tree you will need to protect the bark by covering the wire or string with a soft rubber tube. The other end is secured to the container or another branch to hold the limb in the position you want. If you secure it to another branch be sure to use the protective tubing on this end as well, you also need to be sure that you do not pull the anchor limb out of it’s position.

Choose the Right Airsoft Gun

When you go to purchase an airsoft gun you will want to have done your research on the different types of them. There are three different types of airsoft guns; spring airsoft guns, electric, and gas-powered guns.

An airsoft spring gun is a type that uses a spring to assist the firing of the BB. It is an affordable type of airsoft gun and is normally styled in the pistol or handgun form. This is a great type to choose if you are a beginner or new to airsoft guns. Spring guns in the form of rifles are not for beginners. It shoots out a more powerful force and is considered stronger than most electric or gas powered guns.

It is so cheap because it doesn’t take any external power like gas or electricity. However, you still need to cock and re-cock the slider every time you go to shoot. This is what you cannot shoot automatic or even semi automatic. Airsoft spring handguns are the least powerful form if you compare them to the other two types. Keep in mind that spring guns are only good for ten feet shooting ranges.

Gas powered guns are powered by gas that is inserted in the butt of the airsoft gun. They are also called GBB. The gas for the guns is sold in the form of tin cans and looks a lot like an aerosol can.

In most cases, CFC-free gas is used. Most of the one that use gas use HFC134a. Some do require a more powerful type of gas, so beware when you are purchasing your GBB. You will always want to use the right type of gas because it will damage the gun and could cause harm to yourself. People purchase gas airsoft guns because they are more accurate than any other type. They are also heavier and have more detail for design than the other two types of guns. Gas powered airsoft guns are not for beginners because they are more difficult to handle and care for. This is more of an automatic, machine gun.

Electric guns are powered by battery. Normally, your electric gun will take four AAA batteries. You will most likely want to get the rechargeable batteries because they don’t last long. Airsoft electric guns are also spring guns. Electric guns have to have a spring to be compressed, but with an electric gun you don’t have to manually cock the slider for every shot. Because you don’t have to cock the gun yourself, you are able to get fully automatic shots from an electric gun. Normally an electric gun can shoot up to 280 feet away with a .2g pellet BB. You can also find semi-automatic guns that have electric power.

One big distributor had reported to receive an order of 100,000 sheets of photo stamps within the first week of its market test. An order of 100,000 sheets of photo stamps is totals to 2 million individual stamps produced.

Personalized postage stamps are used exactly the same way as postage stamps. It can be used for First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, and Express Mail. Initially, it is projected to run for a whole year. And USPS itself gives consumers the ability to print their photo stamp online through the Click-N-Ship program at no additional costs.

How To Catch Catfish In Houston

Many fishermen around the globe salivate at the thought of landing a catfish. These fish grow up to between 1.2 and 1.6 meters in length, up to 200 kilograms in weight, and there are over thirty five different species in the world, giving the avid fisherman plenty to think about when trying to catch one.

Although catfish can be found at many different places around the world, one place in particular has an abundance of catfish that sees many fishermen flocking there year in and year out; this place is Houston, Texas.

One issue that does behold any fisherman wishing to catch catfish in Houston is which lake to fish from as there are a few well known lakes to choose from. Choosing the right lake to fish can be an awkward choice, some choose from experience, some choose from others comments, some choose from their own fond memories of times gone by, and some just choose on travel time. One thing is for sure, if the right choice is made it make mean a brace or more of large, beautifully formed catfish.

Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe is an extremely well known haunt of many fishermen looking for catfish due to its huge size, and the large stock piles it contains. For those who know how to fish there can be catfish a plenty to reel in.

Lake Conroe is a huge 21,000 surface acres of water, stretches 21 miles in length and is the reserve water supply for Houston which gives it clean, clear water. The lake has an average depth of about 21 feet.

From Bass to Crappie Lake Conroe has many different species of fish to catch, but it’s the lakes abundance of Channel catfish that anglers swarm to catch all year round. At Lake Conroe smelly baits or cut Shad seems to be the bait of choice to land big Channel catfish, although some people have been known to cat catfish with soap and other interesting bait choices.

Lake Houston

Known more for its white Crappie, Lake Houston takes a well deserved second best position when it comes to Houston catfish fishing. Whether on a boat, or fishing with rod and reel there are plenty of chances to bag a big catfish.

Lake Houston is 11,854 surface acres of water in size and is a municipal reservoir supplying the primary water supply to the city of Houston. The lake has an average depth of about 45 feet.

The reservoir was built in the early 1950’s as an alternative water supply to Lake Sheldon, once the dam had been put in place Lake Sheldon was sold and Lake Houston was then stocked full of fish.

Like Lake Conroe, Lake Houston has a large stock of Bass, Bluegill, Crappie and the most sought after fish, Catfish. Also the bait of choice is Shad as the catfish work up into a frenzy of large proportions when feeding time occurs and they sense Shad in the area.

Giving The Lady A Gun

The great majority of ladies have some inherent dread of all varieties of firearms. This is no doubt largely due to the senseless and irresistible desire of inexperienced persons to indulge in a mock-heroic display and flourish of such arms when in the presence of ladies. All useless demonstration and ostentation with fire arms serves only to distinguish those who are unfamiliar with their proper manipulation and use. Persons handling arms in this manner should be avoided, or promptly compelled to desist. Many of the accidents of the “I did not know it was loaded” order occur in this manner.

There is nothing occult or mysteriously dangerous about fire arms, but their potential power must never be forgotten in handling them. As a weapon of defense the revolver places the weakest and most diminutive person skilled in its use, on an equality with the most powerful antagonist. Ladies who travel extensively and visit semi-civilized countries, especially the wives and daughters of men in the diplomatic service and of the army and navy officers assigned to foreign stations, should be thoroughly familiar with fire arms and skilled in their use.

The necessity of knowing how to shoot, like knowing how to swim, may occur but once in a woman’s lifetime, but when occasion does require either, it is generally under circumstances involving peril to life, and for that reason both are advantageous and valuable accomplishments.

Every woman should, therefore, be sufficiently familiar with fire arms to know how to handle them safely, and, in emergency, to use them with intelligence. While skill in the use of the pistol and revolver is a useful accomplishment, the practice of shooting with these arms will prove exceedingly interesting.

Target practice with the 22-caliber pistol is particularly well suited for ladies, and those who have the opportunity to indulge in it have invariably found it an enjoyable and fascinating pastime. There is every reason, too, to believe that ladies would excel and develop a higher order of skill in pistol shooting than gentlemen, because they are generally more temperate and possess a more delicate nervous system.

A number of civilian shooting clubs have successful ladies’ auxiliary clubs. There are at the present time a large number of ladies who are skillful markswomen with the pistol and revolver.

A very serviceable and handsome combination for ladies’ use is furnished by Smith & Wesson, which consists of their regular target pistol with a 10-inch barrel and an interchangeable .38-caliber revolver barrel and cylinder, fitting to the same stock. These are furnished in a special case with cleaning rods, etc., making a complete and attractive set. The .22-caliber Smith & Wesson Hand Ejector with a 6-inch barrel and .22-caliber Colt Police Positive Target revolvers are also well adapted for ladies’ use.

It is well to begin practice with a .22caliber pistol, as this is a light and very pleasant charge to shoot, and the tendency to “flinch” is reduced to a minimum. After a fair degree of skill has been developed with the .22-caliber pistol reduced charges with a revolver may be tried and from this stage the practice shooting can progress to the regulation full charges. It is desirable that ladies should have a little practice with the revolver with full charged ammunition, so as to be able to manipulate it with sufficient confidence and skill in case of necessity.

Lenses Used For Photography

Many of the lenses used for photography are created on specifications that are almost identical to the prescription lenses that are used in glasses. These specifications are normally instilled in lenses that are totally separate from the camera that they will be attached to but the specifications will have to take into account the lenses that are on the camera too.

There are a variety of lenses that an amateur photographer can use to learn the basics of photography, and there are various styles to camera lenses that would typically be chosen by a professional photographer to use during the course of a business day. The professional photographer will have several cameras in his arsenal that are pre-set for the photographic poses that he will use in his photographs while he is at work.

There are various environments that will affect the quality of the photographs taken, and the lenses chosen for inside a photo studio will be dramatically different from those chosen for a photo shoot in bright sunshine, or in the dark recesses of a photo opportunity that might present itself at the entrance to a nightclub or other nightspot frequented by celebrities.

Most often, a professional photographer will consider zoom lenses used for photography at a football game but the photographer will have to make a choice on whether they want to use a camera with a wide-zoom lens to capture all of the action on the field, or if the photographer needs to concentrate on the up close and personal shots that tourist are very fond of that show the facial features of the person in a whole new light.

Some scientists consider the telephoto lenses used for photography of images that are millions of miles away. The lens mounted on a telescope might weigh more than 3,000 pounds but that lens is also capable of capturing images that might come from the surface of the moon or the newly downgraded planet called Pluto. The scientific uses for zoom lenses may also help space explorers to view damage that has occurred outside one of the space vehicles while in outer space.

Many of the cameras that are used for recreational photographs will typically have zoom lenses installed, but offer no opportunity to adjust the setting on the lenses to gain a better view of the intended subject. Many of these camera lenses will feature an automatic focus and offer the amateur photographer a photographic tool that is easy to maintain and affordable at the same time.

Some professional photographers will chose a different lens for the photographs that will be developed for portraits. Other lenses in his arsenal might allow the professional photographer to apply a color enhancement to the skin of a subject or to add brightness and clarity to landscape backgrounds that are most commonly found in a photographer’s studio. Every camera lens will allow the professional photographer to approach his work with a different perspective.
